Transplanting of winter vegetables:




After having cleaned the garden soil from the residues of summer crops, let's enrich it with organic fertilizer, mixing it with the ground using a pitchfork. If we want the vegetable garden to be well-ordered and the vegetables well spaced let us have a long thread, a couple of stakes and a ruler. We plant the posts at the ends of the plot and stretch the wire between them: in this way we will have a precise reference on where to plant the small plants we have chosen; broccoli, cauliflower and fennel should be placed in precise rows, spacing each small plant by about 25-30 cm, so that they can later develop freely. Even onions and leeks can be buried with the same method, but we can arrange them more closely, every 10-20 cm; even the rows may be less spaced, because these vegetables take up little space. Onions and leeks can also be grown directly from seed; in this case the soil is prepared, it is raked well and then the vegetables chosen are scattered: taking a handful of seeds and spreading them on the ground with a semicircular gesture. To better sow the vegetables it is possible to mix the seeds with light sand or sawdust: in this way we will see clearly the areas already sown and those still without seeds. If the soil of our garden is very compact and we want to grow onions and leeks, which have an underground development, remember to work the soil by adding a good amount of sand; in this way we will obtain a softer ground, where the vegetables will develop without fatigue.
